Surfacine remains fully inert and bio-active after exposure
to a variety of physical and chemical stresses:
- Low temperature (-15°C)
- Ethanol and boiling water
- Prolonged exposure to solutions of varying pH (4 - 10)
- High ionic strength solution (2% sodium chloride)
- Long term exposure to urine (35°C for 7 days)
- Human serum albumin (0.7%) in phosphate buffered saline
- Exposure to blood products
- Worn by human volunteers for a 3 day period
- Gamma irradiation (5 Mrad)
- E-beam sterilization (25 kGrays)
- Ethylene oxide sterilization
- Autoclave (wet or dry)
- Multiple exposure to bacterial challenge
