Surfacine is non-toxic to mammalian cells.

Surfacine is a molecularly designed surface consisting primarily of silver halides and polymeric biguanide.

For assessing mammalian cell toxicity, coated samples were extracted in phosphate buffered saline at 50°C for 48 hours. The extracts were evaluated for toxicity by contacting them with mouse fibroblast cells. Cell morphology remained unchanged indicating absence of cytotoxic elutables.
